What's On Magazine review on Al Pillay - 24th October
2005 |
No one hits you with the
unexpected in quite the same way as Al Pillay. Those who only knew him as the
transexual disco diva with the dancefloor smash 'Pistol In My Pocke't, or as
Channel Four's first out and proud star in 'The Comic Strip Presents' were
pleasantly surprised by his exotic autobiographical stage show 'Wide Open For
You'. Then came a new acting slant on Al Pillay in his camp confessional
one-man playlet 'Glitter and Twisted'. But when he reinvented himself and took
his new cabaret act to Pizza on the Park a new, slimline and totally unique
star was born. The camp comedy is still at its glittermost, but vocally he's
now in a class of his own. As an interpreter of songs, Pillay has found his
natural home in the cabaret room, where he delivers lyrics to unexpected
numbers like `Bali Hai' in a conversational way but with deeply felt emotion
and a level of dramatic
power that can only come from within. Interpreting a lyric is an art form.
Al Pillay is already a master.
